While Black Americans make up about approximately 13% of the population, they account for approximately 35% of the people with kidney failure in the United States (National Institutes of Health).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdempowers.com\/black-kare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Black K.A.R.E.<\/a> \u2014 which stands for &#8220;<strong><em>Kidney Awareness, Resources, and Education<\/em><\/strong>&#8221; \u2014 has launched an online toolkit on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdempowers.com\/black-kare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">its website<\/a> to provide resources, information, and more about Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), self-care for kidney health, diagnosis and treatment, and much more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-buttons-is-layout-16018d1d wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pdempowers.com\/black-kare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Learn More!<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Kidney Awareness, Resources, and Education<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Chronic Kidney Disease Awareness<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>African Americans are at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdempowers.com\/black-kare\/race-and-kidney-disease\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">increased risk for chronic kidney disease (CKD)<\/a>. About 37 million American adults have CKD and most don\u2019t even know it. Early detection and treatment can prevent complications from kidney disease. Educating yourself about treatment options and resources will empower you to shape your healthcare outcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are 3 important steps to managing life around CKD:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Step 1.<\/em> Manage Your Health<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A diagnosis of CKD doesn\u2019t mean that you have kidney failure. Know your stage of kidney disease. In the early stages, there are many things that you can do to help slow disease progression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your lab test values are a guide to how slowly or quickly your kidney disease is progressing. Keep close watch on your results. Take the time to learn the positives and negatives of each option so that you can make decisions based on your needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Step 3.<\/em> Be Your Own Advocate<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Be your own advocate. Get involved in developing your treatment plan\u2014don\u2019t just leave it to your healthcare team to make all the decisions for you. Managing your kidney disease requires coordination among doctors, nurses, dieticians, pharmacists, social workers, and psychologists. Stay in close contact with your healthcare team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ask questions. Make sure you understand your treatment options. Make your wishes known.
