Breast Cancer Awareness Month — Take Action for Your Health!

Sep 18

October marks the start of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which aims to increase awareness about the disease and the importance of early detection. Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women worldwide, and as women age, their risk of cancer tends to increase. By undergoing regular screenings and receiving early diagnoses, women can significantly reduce the likelihood of illness or death from breast cancer. If you’re wondering whether or not you should get screened, we highly advise breast cancer screening with your medical provider, especially if you have a family history of the disease.

If you’re looking for a breast cancer screening in Wichita, KS, HealthCore Clinic can help!

Overview & What to Expect

Mammograms

What is a Mammogram?

A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast that is used to detect any abnormalities, such as lumps or masses, that may indicate breast cancer. Mammograms are typically recommended for women starting at age 40 but can be done earlier if a patient has certain risk factors. Mammograms are especially important for patients who have a family history of breast cancer or who have had a previous breast cancer diagnosis. They are safe, quick, and relatively painless, but can be uncomfortable for some patients. During a mammogram, patients will have their breasts compressed between two plates while the X-ray is taken. At HealthCore Clinic, we highly recommend regular mammograms every 1-2 years for patients aged 40-75.

What to Expect

For patients who have never had a mammogram before, the process can feel intimidating or uncomfortable. However, it is important to know that mammograms are a relatively quick and easy procedure. HealthCore providers recommend patients schedule their mammogram for a time when their breasts are not likely to be swollen or tender, such as a week after their period. During the mammogram, the patient will be asked to undress from the waist up and will be given a gown to wear. The mammogram itself only takes a few minutes, and patients typically experience some pressure or discomfort as their breasts are compressed for the X-ray.

The Key to Early Detection

Clinical Breast Exams

Healthcare providers, typically a doctor or a nurse practitioner, check for any lumps or abnormalities in the breasts during a clinical breast exam. During this exam, the healthcare provider will perform a visual inspection of the breasts and lymph nodes in the armpits, as well as a physical exam that involves feeling for any lumps or masses. The exam is typically quick, only taking a few minutes, and is non-invasive. While most discovery of lumps occur during breast self-exams, a trained professional may notice a suspicious place that fails to register as a warning in the patient’s mind. Clinical breast exams are an essential tool for detecting breast cancer early when it is most treatable.
