Boil Water Advisory: What Wichita Residents Need to Know

The City of Wichita has issued a boil water advisory for Wichita water customers following a loss of power at the city’s main water treatment plant and Hess pump station on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.

Until the advisory is lifted, Wichita residents should take precautions when using tap water for drinking, cooking and other activities where water could be swallowed.

What Should I Do During the Boil Water Advisory?

If your home is served by Wichita water, follow these precautions until the advisory is lifted:

Boil tap water for at least one minute before drinking it or using it to prepare food. Allow the water to cool before using it.
You can use bottled water instead of boiled tap water for drinking and food preparation.
Throw away existing ice and do not use ice from your refrigerator or automatic ice maker while the advisory is in effect.
Disinfect dishes and food-contact surfaces by immersing them for at least one minute in clean tap water containing one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.

Can I Shower or Take a Bath?

Yes. According to the City of Wichita, water used for bathing generally does not need to be boiled.

Take extra care with babies and young children to make sure they do not swallow bath water. People with open cuts, wounds or severe rashes may want to talk with their healthcare provider before bathing.

How Long Will the Advisory Last?

There is currently no estimated time for when the boil water advisory will be lifted.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) must receive results from testing at a certified laboratory before the advisory can be rescinded. Continue following boil water precautions until officials announce that the advisory has been lifted.
